Our Oak shakes or hand split shingles are of the highest quality in the country. They are traditionally split down the grain which gives our shakes a lifespan of 80-100 years without treatment. Traditionally used on church steeples they are now being commonly used on new builds. Sawn Oak shingles should not be used as the machining process destroys their lifespan.
Supplied in three lengths with variable widths:
- Full length shake (325mm) packs provide 0.5m2 coverage as laid, with varying widths 75 – 125mm.
- Each 1/2 and 3/4 length (175mm and 225mm respectively) pack covers 4.5 linear metres, with varying widths
Exposure 115mm.
Stainless steel nails are essential for fitting Oak Shakes due to the high tannin content. We recommend 2.65mm x 50mm clout head annular ring shank nails for shakes.
Here’s a fantastic modern example of their use at the Brockholes visitor Centre in Preston.
